Everyone’s mouth is different. When it comes to braces, you may have yours for many months, or perhaps up to two years. On average, a person will be wear their braces for about 22 months. Once your braces come off, you will want to show off your new smile to everyone, and who can blame you? But, you are still not quite done! Your teeth and the ligaments in your jaw have still not completely settled into the new positions. To assist in that, Dr. Steven Thompson will fit you with a retainer. A retainer is in part composed of a wire that fits on your teeth to keep them in place. Removable retainers fit across the fronts of your teeth, while fixed retainer is cemented into your mouth with a wire that runs behind your teeth.
There is no set length of time for wearing a retainer. Some people will need to wear a retainer for a few years, while others may need to wear one every night for the rest of their lives. It is important that you follow your dentist’s instructions about wearing your retainer. If you do not, your teeth may drift back into their original positions.
If you wear a removable retainer, you should clean it daily, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a toothpaste formulated for your retainer. It’s also advisable to place your retainer in a soaking solution, if you take it out before bed. For a fixed retainer, make sure that you brush twice a day and floss, using a floss threader, since it can be difficult to reach the area with regular dental floss.
