A View of Veneers

Posted .

When it comes to a beautiful smile, you have a number of options from which to choose. One option for enhancing your smile is a dental veneer.

Veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain that your dentist applies to the surface of your tooth. Veneers can be used to give you a whiter smile, or to fix problems such as crooked teeth or gaps between your teeth. They can also replace lost enamel, which is the substance that protects your tooth. You should talk with your dentist about your cosmetic needs, and your current oral health to see if a veneer would work for you.

When it comes time to place your veneers, the dentist will remove a small amount of the surface of your tooth so that the veneer can be attached. An impression of your tooth will be sent to a lab and a veneer will be crafted. The dentist will place a temporary veneer on the tooth while the permanent piece is being made. Once it is finished, the veneer will then be cemented to the surface of your tooth. The process may take two appointments, and usually anesthesia is not need, although every patient is different.

You will need to care for your veneer the way that you would any of your other teeth, however you may want to consider using a non-abrasive toothpaste to keep your veneer from being damaged.

It’s important to remember that because veneers involve removing some of the surface of your tooth, the process is irreversible. At some point, the veneer will need to be replaced, but proper care will help to last.
